Before Uniswap v3, providing liquidity was simple - you deposited two assets into a pool and your capital was spread evenly across all possible prices. Whether ETH traded at $500 or $5,000, your liquidity stayed active collecting fees the entire time. As a result your liquidity was distributed across the entire price curve of the pair, only a small portion of your capital was actually being used at the current trading price at any moment. The rest was allocated to price levels that might never be reached. This system worked, but it wasn’t perfect; unless your trading pair perfectly ran the gamut of the entire price curve it ending up leaving most of the capital underutilized. And as the infamous creativity of DeFi is wont to do; they decided to optimize the hell out of it and gave us Uniswap v3. This new iteration changed everything by letting LPs concentrate liquidity into specific price ranges.
Price Ranges
To better understand what price ranges are and why they matter I’ve found it helpful to think of this like being a farmer trying to sell produce at a local farmers market. With earlier versions of Uniswap, you were forced to offer your goods across every possible price point - say, anywhere from $1 to $100 - even though almost all buyers were actively purchasing in the $20 to $30 range. As a consequence, most of your inventory sat waiting for customers at price levels that rarely, if ever, materialized. You still sold produce at the end of the day, but the vast majority of your capital was just sitting idle.
With the advent of Uniswap v3, you can now concentrate everything right in that $20 to $30 sweet spot where buyers are actually active. Instead of spreading your goods across the full $1-$100 range, you deploy your capital precisely where the demand is. Because you're targeting a tighter price range, you're able to move dramatically more produce with the same inventory - your capital becomes far more productive. The tradeoff, of course, is that if buyers shift and start transacting outside your range, your position goes idle and you stop earning entirely until price returns.
Same Pair, Different Beliefs
Once you understand this shift, it becomes clear that Uniswap v3 is not just about choosing asset pairs anymore. It is about being able to optimize based on where you think the price is likely to trade. Two Uniswap v3 positions can hold the exact same assets but perform very differently depending on how their liquidity is distributed.
Let’s take a simple example:
Imagine two WBTC / USDC positions
Both positions hold WBTC and USDC
Both earn fees from the same trading pair
The only difference is their target range
One position concentrates liquidity narrowly around the current price. The other spreads liquidity across a wider band. On the surface, they look identical. In practice, they represent two completely different strategies on WBTC’s performance relative to USDC. That flexibility is the real innovation - by allowing liquidity to be more customizable, users can take a bolder or a more conservative stance depending on their expectations for the market. You can concentrate exposure when conviction is high or you can widen it when uncertainty is proliferating the market. In other words, returns become shaped not just by what you hold, but by how precisely you choose to participate.
Narrow Range
A narrow-range, as the name might imply, concentrates liquidity across a specific, small part of the range.
This means your capital earns a higher share of fees while price stays inside the range. However, because liquidity is tightly packed, fee APR often appears higher. The tradeoff is that because you are narrowly concentrated, you are more likely to go out of range if price moves significantly one way or the other - and you’re more exposed to impermanent loss risk. To tie it back to the earlier example, it's as if buyers suddenly shift and start transacting outside your $20 to $30 window, moving into price territory you never deployed capital into.
This setup appeals to users who believe price will remain relatively stable, at least in the near term. They are optimizing for fee intensity, not longevity. You can think of this like selling volatility - if the price stays where you expect, you earn more, but if the price moves sharply, your position goes inactive and you stop earning.
These vaults tend to attract active liquidity providers who are used to monitoring positions, traders with a directional view, and users chasing higher short- term yield. It is a higher maintenance strategy with higher potential upside, but less forgiveness.
Wide Range
A wide range vault spreads liquidity across a much larger price band.
Here, fee density at any single price is lower, but your position stays active through much larger market moves. Instead of maximizing fees in a narrow window, you are prioritizing uptime.
Instead of targeting that narrow $20 to $30 band, you might deploy across $10 to $50 - capturing more price movement at the cost of lower fee density at any single point.
This strategy is used for those who want passive exposure, expect volatility, do not want to actively rebalance, and care more about consistency than getting the absolute peak APR. Having a wider range doesn't eliminate impermanent loss outright; it just dilutes its severity at any given price move - IL is still present and can still be significant.
A wide range earns less during calm periods, but if the price moves you keep on earning (as long as it stays in range). This is closer to traditional LP behavior, but with Uniswap v3 you can fine tune your exposure. Ranges are a belief about future price behavior - narrow ranges favor price stability while wider ranges favor price volatility. Selecting the range that fits for you is essentially choosing how you want to be paid for uncertainty.
Where Saffron Fits In
The market has felt incredibly strange lately, and against that backdrop one thing has become clear: DeFi is maturing beyond a single shared outcome for everyone participating in a strategy. The range flexibility we’ve discussed in this article creates an opportunity that we’ve designed Saffron to take advantage of.
